Self-Drive Tours

This tour links two of the most iconic must-see attractions of South Africa. Between Johannesburg and the Kruger Park lies the northern extremity of the Drakensberg Mountains and the Blyde River Canyon, the third largest canyon in the world, blessing the landscape with extreme scenic beauty. Mountain passes cut through the Drakensberg Mountains descending 3000m over a mere 50km delivering you to the “lowveld” and the world-famous Kruger Park. The Kruger Park is the size of several small countries – such as Wales, Israel, Belgium or the State of Texas and is home to the greatest diversity of large mammals and birds in South Africa. It is a natural heritage showpiece that is a must see for anyone wishing to experience a true African Wildlife Safari. Pretoria

Day 1: Arrive in Johannesburg and overnight – depending on flight time you can a guided sightseeing from a selection of options add (not included in the price). Basis: Bed & Breakfast Day 2: An easy day’s drive to arrive at accommodation base in the Hazyview area from which you can explore the highlights of the Panorama Route. Basis: B&B

Day 3: A full day to relax and soak up the peace and tranquillity, or to explore the Panorama Route by car or enjoy one of the many more adventurous experiences and excursions available. Basis: Bed & Breakfast

Day 4 & 5: We change location to another accommodation in the Hoedspruit area allowing you to take in more of the highlights of the region or experience more adventurous excursions. Basis: Bed & Breakfast

Day 6 - 9: Four nights, in two different camps, in the Kruger Park allows you to cover part of the Kruger Park. Here you are at liberty to explore the park at your own pace in your own vehicle or book guided walks, sunset drives, night drives or sunrise drives with park guides (not included). You can self-cater or enjoy meals at the variety of restaurants in the park. Basis: Bed only + Conservation Fee

Day 10: Return to Johannesburg

The stretch of east coast between Durban and Port Elizabeth is well known to the more intrepid South African traveller. The middle section is locally known as the Wild Coast due to rugged beauty and relative lack of commercial development. This region of South Africa certainly does not suffer from “over tourism” making it an ideal destination for the more intrepid traveller, who enjoys taking a slower pace, discovering off the beaten road gems and has a passion for the sea and sun. The first day is a big drive to get into the region, so be sure to set off early. On this itinerary you will pass typical rural African villages and towns and beautiful landscapes. The destinations selected offer some of the most perfect beach locations and hospitality of international standard. Rounding off this coastal adventure we have included a visit to the famous Addo Elephant Park for a chance to experience our magnificent wildlife. King-Shaka

Days 1: Arrive at Durban’s King Shaka airport and spend the first night in a local guest house to get a good night’s rest ahead.

Days 2 - 4: Set off early for a big day of driving that takes you into the heart of rural South Africa where you will pass traditional settlements and see local people going about their daily lives with an enviable sense of timelessness and lack of frantic hustle and bustle. At the end of the journey you will be rewarded with a stay at the most incredible award-winning accommodation and hospitality. Two full days to soak up the pristine scenery, relaxed sophistication and hospitality of the Pondo people. There is plenty to do for the more active traveller.

Basis: Days 5 & 6: A relatively short drive to Coffee Bay and our next destination which is home to Hole in the Wall National Heritage Site. Relaxing, hiking, surfing and mountain biking are some of the activities you can enjoy here.

Days 7 & 8: A half day scenic drive to yet another Wild Coast gem and iconic family run hospitality establishment offering luxury accommodation, gourmet cuisine and a wide variety of adventurous or relaxing activities.

Basis: Dinner, Bed & Breakfast

Days 9 & 10: Leaving the wild coast region our final beach destination to round off the East Coast Explorer offers yet more beautiful beaches as well as canoeing, horse riding, mountain biking and sunset barge cruises.

Days 11 & 12: Two nights in Addo Elephant Park offers an opportunity to experience one of South Africa’s prime national wildlife heritage parks. Home to the “Big 5” you are welcome to explore in your own hire car or book safari drives with local guides on arrival. You can self-cater or book a meal at the restaurant.

Basis: Bed only + Conservation Fee

Day 13: After a full morning in the park it is a short drive to Port Elizabeth for the last night.
